History of the Asics brand

The brand began as Panmure Co, Ltd on September 1, 1949. Its founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, began manufacturing basketball shoes in his hometown of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Soon after the range of sporting activities expanded into the various Olympic styles used throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the products were used by athletes all over the world.

In 1977, Onitsuka Tiger merged with GTO and JELENK to form ASICS Corporation. Despite the name change, the vintage line of Asics shoes is still manufactured and sold internationally under the Onitsuka Tiger brand.
