The company was founded by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard in 2009 in the French city of Annecy . They tried to design a shoe that would enable faster downhill running and created a model with an oversized sole. The shoe is named after a Maori phrase that loosely means "flying above the ground" .
