Christmas markets in your city: dress stylishly and warmly

We cannot even imagine the atmosphere in cities and towns without Christmas markets. They are part of the Advent season and contribute to the fact that we slow down for a while, meet family and friends or buy the last gifts. Don't forget to dress appropriately so that you can enjoy the Christmas atmosphere regardless of the weather.

What makes traditional Christmas markets popular?

Many stalls, wooden houses and mobile caravans offer all kinds of sweet and salty treats. Do you also have something that you tend to put on the markets every year? Some treats are the same throughout Slovakia, others are typical for a specific region. You will find traditional specialties there, but also modern novelties, with which the stall holders want to draw attention to themselves.

Bratislava (23/11/2023 - 31/12/2023)

The Christmas markets in the capital started on Thursday 23 November 2023 and will be available to visitors until the end of 2023, i.e. until 31 December. (with a short break during public holidays). They are traditionally held on the Main and Hviezdoslav Squares . That year they also bring some news:

• the so-called "welcoming zones" where visitors can hide from the hustle and bustle of full streets

• returnable cups as part of the capital city's ecological orientation

Košice (1/12/2023 - 31/12/2023)

The metropolis of the East also opened its Christmas markets this year earlier than usual, on December 1, 2023 . They are traditionally held on Hlavná Street as part of the Košice Fairytale Christmas project, and the news is that they will continue even between holidays until the end of 2023 . They traditionally include:

• rich cultural program 

• ice sculptures

• wooden Bethlehem

• Christmas Radio Live

• ice rink in the city park

Nitra (1/12/2023 – 31/12/2023)

The stalls on Svätopluk Square in Nitra opened on December 1, 2023 and will last until December 31 . A 15 m high decorated Christmas tree became the dominant feature. Like most cities, Nitra also wants to follow the path of ecology, which is why returnable cups with a Christmas motif will be on offer . After buying and drinking a drink, its owner can decide for himself:

• whether he will return the return cup and the deposit will be returned to him

• or keeps the cup as a souvenir

Prešov (25/11/2023 – 31/12/2023)

The Prešov Christmas markets are traditionally held in the pedestrian zone along Hlavná street . The city center, decorated with Christmas lights, will be supplemented by about 70 stands from 25.11. until 31.12., i.e. from Katarina to New Year's Eve. When choosing vendors, the city decided to support mainly local producers . Among the novelties will also be a Children's Town near the horse statue , which will include, for example:

• children's carousel

• non-alcoholic punch

• pancakes

• stalls with various children's goods

Banská Bystrica (1/12/2023 – 22/12/2023)

In the heart of Slovakia, Christmas punch or mulled wine can be had from December 1. The markets will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. until December 22 . The markets on Náměstí SNP will be complemented by a Christmas tree, which was lit by Mikuláš himself on December 6. The wish bell near the Christmas tree is a must-stop for anyone who takes a walk through the Christmas square in Banská Bystrica.

Žilina (23/11/2023 – 2/1/2024)

The city of Žilina will offer visitors and residents the longest Christmas markets . They will be held on Mariánský náměstí and Náměstí Andrej Hlinka from 23.11.2023 until 2.1.2024! After 23.12. the offer of stands and goods may be limited, as the opening of stands will be voluntary after this date. However, the atmosphere will definitely be great anyway. The cultural program will include, for example :

• Robo Opatovsky

• Heleňine oči

• Sisa Sklovská

• Fíha Tralala is popular among children

Trenčín (1/12/2023 – 23/12/2023)

You can buy Christmas goods and various goodies from 1.-23. December. This pre-Christmas event is called the Magic of Christmas under the Castle, and it includes a traditional Christmas fair , the stalls of which are open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you love memories in the form of photos , you can let yourself be immortalized by a photo frame with a view of the Trenčín Castle.

Christmas markets in other cities

Poprad

The traditional Christmas market will take place on December 13-16, 2023 at Náměstí sv. Aegis. Christmas markets will include not only craft and sales stands, but also a rich accompanying cultural program.

Martin

In Martina, the Christmas markets will be held at Divadelní námestí, from 1 December 2023 until 31 December 2023.

Piešťany

The traditional Piešťany Christmas markets will take place on Náměstí slobody and Winterová street between 24.11.2023 and 1.1.2024.

Liptovský Mikuláš

You can experience the Christmas markets at Náměstí osloboditelův in Liptovský Mikuláš from 18.12. – 21.12.2023 from 15:30 – 22:00. You will enjoy carols, the smell of punch and time spent with friends.

Michalovce

You can enjoy the pre-Christmas atmosphere on Obchodna Street in Michalovce from 8-9 December 2023. The cultural program also includes a performance by the singer Janais.

Nové Zámky

In Nové Zámky, you can look forward to a varied cultural program from 1 December 2023 to 6 January 2024. It also includes Christmas concerts on the Main Square, which take place until December 22, 2023.

Lučenec

The aroma of mulled wine and various goodies will spread in Lučenac on December 15-16, 2023 on Náměstí republiky. It also includes a Christmas raffle and a performance by singer Veronika Rabada.

Zvolen

The Zvolen Christmas markets take place on December 9-10, 2023 at Námestí SNP.
