A breakthrough in the production of raincoats occurred in the 19th century when Charles Mackintosh invented the vulcanization of rubber. This material was then more flexible and held its shape better. After World War II, new waterproof materials were invented, such as polyurethane, vinyl and nylon. Mass production caused the price to drop and the raincoat became affordable. Currently, the raincoat is a fashion trend and a common part of outfits. Different colored pants and skirts go great with it.
